Ok since i got my 96 Z34 in 2001 i have gone thru, its original trany, a rebuild, and the great performance build is starting to show its age...

Here is what I'd like to do...
L32 swap with trany into my 96 Z34? : edit : going with L36 and trany out of a 98 Z34 then topswap

Depending on if i can find a donor i may end up with a low miles L24? or L36. I'd actually prefer the higher compression.

From what i know so far:
*Engine cradle will work.
*I need:
**Upper Engine Mounts
**Radiator Hoses (Upper Lower and pair to heater core?)
added ... Heater core lines.
**need to beat the Hell out of my fire wall so i can get a down pipe in. ??? Will a set of pacesetter headers help any esp if i mod??? ended up with Speed Daddy headers. and even with all the pounding i do rub some on the driver side fire wall with the SD headers. another 1/2" would have cleared it. i will take care of this when i install the topswap
**Harness??? hybrid between my harness and a L32? is a 98-99 3800 harness close enough to work on a L32 to warrant tracking one down just to cut it up anyway. chances are i will have the harness from what ever donor engine/trany i get i have a 99 GTP PCM that i can flash with my tuner to what ever. unless i need a newer pcm for a L32??? I ended up finding a 98Z34 harness and got a 98 PCM. thanks to brianteel from motorswap.org and Dave96z34 i got the pin outs to make the harness changes to work with the fire wall.

Ok so lots of questions i guess. i appreciate any help. and I am a wiz at tuning. so if anyone needs help down here in florida i just might be your guy!

Here are pics:

Before:

After:

again the SD headers rubbed on the driver side of the hole. and the O2 sensor did not fit. i had to weld in a bung under the car in the down pipe. when i do the topswap i plan on opening up the sections of the fire wall to better make room for the sensor and headers.

thanks to bumpin's writeup over on montecarloforum.com i was able to know where to cut and pound the fire wall back. the engine is going in tomorrow so wont know 100% if it all worked yet but it should have been more then enough.

Irony rocks.

I've recently learned that, in ~1 year, I'll lose the year-round garage storage (heated in winters) that I've appreciated the last 10+ years. The couple that owns the house, building & property is moving to SC. I will not have the funds needed to buy the place, though I would LOVE to live there. So, since other similar storage options in the area are more expensive, unemployment continues & medical bills are still due ... it's probably time to sell my MCs.

Yep, life is still good. It's just frustrating to watch things for which I've worked hard disappear due to no fault of my own. At least I can still drive & write! Hardly seems fair, but life isn't fair. Things'll work out; they always do...correct?

*
As of now, I'll drive to Versailles OH in 2 weeks (Tuesday, 05/15/2012 - Friday, 05/18/2012) to help Mike at Mike's Montes get more pictures on the website & re-write some of the descriptions (which I've already started). It'll get me out of the house a bit & give me an albeit brief road trip.

Not sure yet what routes I will take to & from, but I will most-likely leave Elgin IL before or right after lunch on Tuesday, returning home late Friday evening. If you want me to stop between here & there, or if you're in the Versailles OH area & want to meet up Wednesday or Thursday evening, please let me know....

New Take On Woodgrain For 5Th Gens

this was an older idea i had for the door trim. i used a combination of drills, saws and files to make a rounded cutout in the woodgrain. i may have sacrificed a locating pin or clip to do it. then i took a piece of carbon fiber about an 1/8 inch thick that used to be part of the hood of a honda civic and trimmed it just larger than the hole. once i had the orientation of the fiber correct, i hotglued it from the inside after prepping and painting the trim a generic silver metallic color. i did the dash trim the same color after removing the monte emblem and then reattached it after for a clean job. the carbon fiber was a bit thick for this app but a vinyl sticker version over thin metal might work as well. i also put a carbon fiber panel behind the center consoler cd storage area after unscrewing the stock rear section of it.

Northstar Monte New Price $3500! Obo

Yes it is back up for sale. I have decided to move on. It was fun rebuilding the car but now it is time to let it go. Three cars is getting to be too much.

The details.....

Bought the car 9/27/08 with 136,424 miles and a blown motor and transmission. Drove 750 some miles each way to get this car. Basically the head gaskets were blown so badly that coolant was dumping into the oil drain back passages and past the pistons and into the oil thus eating away at the rod bearings.

I bought the car thinking it ran slightly hot, boy was I wrong. Two weeks after the motor was done for I spun 4 rod bearings so I parked it for the winter (about 4-5 months) until it was warmer out so I could start working on it.

After looking over the car I decided everything was garbage on it. The trans. and motor leaked severely the front brakes were gone bad tie rods bad ball joints everything was shot. So I decided to rebuild it all.

Here's basically the run down of what I did.

Motor

What was done....

Had the block hot tanked and cleaned. Complete inspection was done on the block and the heads. Had the cylinder walls honed to get the dex-cool stains off. All the main caps and rods were checked for proper size and inspected.

Parts

Reman Crank
4 new rods
reused stock pistons, new stock rings
new rod bearings, and main bearings
New GM TTY bolts for mains and rods
New GM oil bed plate (This is what the oil passes through to the mains, and rods. If not replaced they leak internally and externally)
Heads were resurfaced, cams polished and worn lifters replaced
New valve seals installed
New timing components like tensioner's, intermediate sprocket gear (bearing was worn due to metal in oil)
New sealed power oil pump
New harmonic balancer
Two new o2 sensors, new GM knock sensor
A/C Bypass pulley
Idler pulley
Tensioner Pulley
New reman alternator
New serp belt and water pump belt

All gaskets were replaced

x2 throttle body gaskets
egr gasket
X2 Intake gasket
Back fire valve on intake was also replaced (seal was bad)
injector o-rings
valve cover gaskets
X2 exhaust mani. gasket
X2 head gasket
water pump seal
t-stat seal
new t-stat
water x-over gaskets
front and rear main seals
New seals on the oil filter plate and oil cooler lines
front cover gasket
cam seal for water pump shaft
No oil pan or half case seals were used just GM rtv. The lower end of these motors DO NOT SEAL WITH STOCK GASKETS. THe dealer wont even sell them they are a waste of time instead they sold me a tube of rtv. It has worked wonders. If you have ever changed oil at a quick lube for about a week you wil understand what the issue was with these motors they leak like you have never seen a motor leak.

As for the completely stripped head bolts I drilled and re-tapped all 20 of them for a larger coarser threaded head stud. The northstar is known for head gasket failures. The head bolts over time pull the threads from the brittle aluminum due to the casting process of the block. They are die casted blocks which I am told leaves lots of air in the aluminum. When you drill the blcok it turns to almost a dust.

The head stud kit was purchased from northstarperformance.com for I wanna say $550.

Transmission

Complete over haul was done
Tear down and inspection of all hard parts was done.
New torque converter
New sensors
New shift solenoids
New TCC solenoid
Everything but input and output shafts and chains were replaced. Virtually a new transmission.
Work on trans. was done by a very reputable shop locally that builds lots of race car transmissions and industrial truck transmissions. So they know there sh*t.
Cv axels were inspected and new grease boots put on also

Suspension/brakes

New front and rear calipers
New stainless steel brake lines
All new hardware
Raybestos ceramic pads front and rear
Raybestos rotors front and rear
Disc brake conversion done on the rear also, car was originally drum.
Stock lateral links
New oem black carpet
Mint rear leather seat
black trim for around the door and rear window with the leather insert
The exterior of the car is the worst part the paint is peeling which is common for the mid 90's gm white. Over all there is no major rust underneath the car or on the body. No rusting rear quarters or rear shock towers here.
...I have a second opportunity! Yep, my nephew will have his first sibling in a few months. Wonder if his sibling will be into cars, too...?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my role as uncle & am looking forward to being an uncle again. My "corrupting skills", originally developed for friends' kids, have sharpened with my nephew these last 3+ years. Still don't know why kids like me so much....

*
Hard to believe I've finished my 36 sessions of Cardiac Rehab for my 11/11/2011 open heart surgery; last session was 04/13/2012. I plan to return to the facility via their monthly fee, but I have to find a new job first. Wouldn't mind some other dreams/goals coming true, either...just sayin'.

Some people have likened CR to watching paint dry, but not for me. It made me a bit more "lean'n'mean". More importantly, it was fun, thanks to the nursing staff & fellow rehabbers.

ive put this info out before but it has been a long time. The late 90s and early 2000s malibus had a 15 or 16 inch alloy wheel with a removable center cap. the cap has a metallic look even though it is plastic and has integral hub cap covers like the 15 inch lumina/monte carlo full hub caps. if you simply put these on in place of the caps, they sit in the center of the factory steel wheel perfectly and are secured by the lug covers. there is no better or easier way to have the look of a cop car wheel becuase the old caprices and impalas are either the wrong lug or simply dont fit.

Cheap Tb Heat Shield

I was bored and going thru my parts bin when i came up with this.

I had the Radiator fan heat shield left over from when it had to come off for the header install and had my L67 TB laying around and saw the bolt hole for the support bracket that most do not use anyway... with one simple bend i was able to mount the radiator heat shield to the TB. Yes I know people are going to say heat shields don't do much at all for performance. But, it can help lower the temp of the TB due to the header cross over and may save or lengthen the life of the MAF sensor. either way its basically a free mod. most run the radiator fans without these heat shields when having headers anyway and don't have any fan issues. ok on to the pics.

I bought a Matco memory saver that uses a 9v battery and plugs into the accy outlet on my 06 monte. I had to disconnect both battery cables to clean the terminals. After I was done all the radio presets were gone and the compass was uncalibrated but all the stored info like trip and average speeds and fuel economy were there. So I don't know if it worked or not. Any advice?

*
I love "March Madness", the NCAA basketball tournament. I enjoy watching the games, particularly the close ones, witnessing the comebacks, being stunned by the shockers. I'm not exactly sure what the attraction is (perhaps the part of me that loves timelines?), but I'm addicted to watching the brackets as teams advance & others are eliminated.

So, with "March Madness", the "Monte" edition "BRACKETS"....

ROADS REGION

Knight Division

Networking & Brainstorming

*
I'm posting the possibility of a new networking/brainstorming group to numerous boards/groups; the more diverse the experiences represented, the more likely the ideas exchanged will be beneficial to multiple people. I see this as a way to share info about employment, health issues, automotive interests, etc. You do NOT have to live in Chicagoland to be a member & participate!

Possible initial meeting dates...

...Sunday, 04/22/2012 (afternoon)

...Tuesday, 04/24/2012 (evening)

...Saturday, 04/28/2012 (morning)

Possible initial meeting locations...

...Elgin IL's Colonial Cafe ("meeting room" area)

...Elgin IL's Gail Borden Library (meeting room)

Who is IN?!

I've been networking & sending resumes as much as possible, but nothing so far. My background is mostly customer service, including a Help Desk job working with Advance Ship Notices through EDI. The last job wasn't exactly what the title indicated. I've been researching non-profits, but those are struggling.... I'd love to get into marketing in some capacity, radio, writing, event creation/hosting (done a number of gatherings in the Chicago area, though I'm told that doesn't count as "professional" experience), etc.

I'm not panicking...yet. I've kept busy by going through stuff in my room, lots of Nephew Time, attending workshops/presentations, finishing my 36 sessions of Cardiac Rehab (definite PLUS), etc.

Hid Lights For 5Th Gen

a friend of mine had broken headlamp assemblies from a lexus suv. this is how i used the components to make an oem quality coversion

the igniters were relatively thin and flat and a few square inches with plastic covers and a ground and positive wire and then the braided wire to the bulb.

turning over the monte headlamps reveals a flat area on the bottom where a steel or aluminum plate can be cut and screwed to the plastic headlamp brackets. i painted mine to prevent corrosion
i then screwed the igniters to the plate and used silicone for the covers leaving two small notches for the wiring.

i removed the stock low beam bulb and a metal adapater plate that screws to the housing. a small notch in the houding using a flat file made the hid bulb a perfect secure fit.i forget exactly how it is secured becuase this was years ago but it used only retainers that were already on the monte lamp. i then used common spade terminals and plugged the igniter wires into the monte harness and wrapped it for protection. i routed the bulb harness inside the headlamp bracket to keep it secure too.

in the car the electronics are not at all visible as they sit on the bottom of the lamp which is on top of the bumper reinforcment. no modifications had to be done to the electrical system and this can easily be undone. it all depends on what you have to work with but it looks great in the daytime and especially at nighttime when the hid makes that little him and brightens up slowly.

ive upgraded to the 06ss and will be saying goodbye to my dependable 95ls. it is out for sale on the street. 139k on the car which is blue with grey buckets. less than 100k on the drivetrain. set of alloy wheels and set of steels with custom police style center caps. (not really custom, came off a malibu alloy wheel and fit perfectly!).

good title and inspection. runs and drives well. needs a compressor due to freon leak. also has its share of dents and dings but is all one color

has a decent system with a detachable face pioneer, usb/ipod hookup into the glove box, 2 pioneer 12s in a nice handbuilt box with plexiglass bowtie facing interior and bass activated strobes inside box.
it also had a bunch of little mechanical stuff done to bring it up to par.

has real hid lights using oem lexus components and the rare cutlass factory strut brace.

im asking 2750 on the car's for sale signs but will entertain any reasonable offer especially for a mymonte member! the car is in egg harbor city to be more specific.

Difficulties In Life...

Hello all... I've been struggling with things recently, namely the diagnosis of my wife. She has stage 3 Hodgkin Lymphoma and has to go through 6 months of chemotherapy. This is a big blow to us, as we just started our lives together, just bought a house, a car for her. I question why this has happened, as she is a great person, why couldn't this happen to some gangbanger that's out shooting up neighborhoods?

Anyway. We don't know how she's going to respond to the chemo, which starts on the 18th, so I'm working on a home business, so I can be close to her whenever she needs me. The link is in my sig; usatyourservice.webs.com. I just finished setting the site up, but if any of you need any of the services listed, let me know; and if you know of any businesses or individuals that may want my services, let me know.

It's greatly appreciated. Thanks, hope everyone has been doing well.

ive had my 95 ls for years now and just came across an 06 black and silver ss for sale buy the first owner close to where i used to live. it has the v8 of course,51k, leather, side air bags, the larger wheels, and the moonroof. the car is clean overall with the exception of a dent on the trunk lid. the woman who owns it claims to have treated it well and has maintenance records. the window sticker asked 13,500 obo but she is considering around 12k. i found a similar car on a dealer lot for 17 asking and nada clean retail is the same. it seems very reasonable if it all checks out. i plan to drive and inspect it this week and want to know if anyone has an opinion on the price or anything to look out for.

Quick Question

About a month ago I overheated the lumina and the head gaskets blew. Since then, I replaced the gaskets, checked for cracks in the heads, resurfaced them and replaced all the other gaskets. The car is running like a champ. The coolant temp always stayed really cool (BEFORE I overheated the car), even on hot days, the temp barely ever went past 150 degrees or so.

Now, the temp has to reach 3/4 of way for the fans to kick in, it's pretty hot compared to what it used to run at. Why is this an issue? Could the coolant temp senor be going bad? Or is there something more sinister going on.. :/

STOP RE-NAMING MY CAR!

This editorial was fun to write, partly because I love history & timelines of cars, roads, etc. I suspect the fact that I enjoy timelines is part of the attraction/addiction I have to watching the brackets as teams advance & others are eliminated in the NCAA basketball tournament....
Toyota Camry. Honda Accord.

Since 1982 and 1976 respectively, these two models have evolved and changed with the times, without enduring a name change. Similar history can be traced for such entries as the Honda Odyssey. The first one wasn't much about which to write, but Honda persevered with the name and developed it into a top seller in its segment.

While some examples of continuous monickers don't celebrate similar history, the names have stuck. For instance, the Nissan Quest, first available in 1993 (with a re-badge model sold as the Mercury Villager), is today in its fourth generation even though none of the variations have particularly resonated with buyers.

Yet, American manufacturers have a knack for giving us a plethora of different names for virtually the same model. GM, Ford and Chrysler do this, perhaps too well.

Forced To Search For A New Job...unemployed

*
I haven't posted in a while because I had been back to work full-time & just didn't have the time to "keep up", get enough rest/sleep, remain in Cardiac Rehab, among other responsibilities. But, now, as of 02/23/2012, less than 3 weeks after returning to full-time work after my 11/11/2011 open heart surgery, I find myself ... unemployed.

To say I'm stunned/numb is just the tip of the iceberg. I've already started the process of "scaling back" financially (including dropping some sponsorships & donations), have applied for unemployment, & started the process of looking for a new job. The last time this happened (April 2005, due to the Sears/Kmart merger), I wasn't anxious because I received a severance package. This time, though, no such severance package and a few more expenses, mainly medical bills.

But, it's not all bad, with increased "Nephew Time", the ability to do Cardiac Rehab 3 times a week for the full 60 minutes (as opposed to Cardiac Rehab 2 times a week for 30-40 minutes only), finishing the process of going through my rooms (sorting through files, re-arranging things, determining what I don't need/want anymore, etc.), &, of course, writing (posting a new round of writings in another topic). While road trips are on indefinite hold, I am thinking of making a weekend-style trip or 2, just to clear my head & relax a bit. We'll see if I can "justify" that expense.

I've NO idea what the future has in store, financially, career-wise, road trips, etc., but I'm doing my best to maintain a positive attitude and look forward to whatever comes my way now, even with having to determine if more heart issues have developed for me. I still may not post much, but I will check in when I can.

Dealer Damaged My Ss

So last monday I brought my car into the dealer to have some work done. I picked it up on friday and noticed some scratches in the driver door. Not a big deal was told it would be repaired and all was fine. However, on Sunday when I went to wash the car I noticed that my front bumper on the driver side wasnt lining up right and after closer inspection i realized it had been torn off and glued back on! I pulled the headlight and found a ton of epoxy holding it to my fender, the tabs on the core support were cracked and loose, splash shield cracked and glued an all in all piss poor job repairing it. I understand accidents happen but what the hell?! They said nothing, tried to hide it, and did a crap job fixing it. I am know for a fact it wasnt like that before and went back today only to be told my service writer wont be in till tomarrow and Ill have to talk to him about it because he was the one that handled it. I did not go in all pissed and screaming because I know that will get me no where but I do feel like i was blowen off. I just want my car fixed like it was with all oem gm parts and thats all but I feel like this is going to turn into a fight. I guess what im asking if anyone has been in a situation like this and how you handled it? Any advice or inside info would be helpful, like i said I dont want anything special, I just want my car fixed properly. Thanks guys!

I cannot f*cking figure out how to get the ignition switch off - there is a lever (for the park lock) that is installed IN the ignition switch, I cannot get the damn thing out. Please help, my lovely Haynes manual says to "remove the bar", NO sh*t, now HOW do I do it? Dave, kinda counting on you for this one.

1995 Monte Engine/tranny Help

Its got 186000 miles on it and wasnt well taken care of before me and ive been slacking. Mpg's is shot, got a nice oil drip, and nothing like the scent of burning coolant in the exhaust, and sometimes I feel like it would be faster if i cut a hole in the floor and fred flinstoned it. So needless to say im looking into putting used motor and tranny into it once I get my taxes back. On a strict budget, but already found atranny with 70k for 250. So that makes me happy, no luck with the motor yet but when I finally track it down any suggestions on what to do. Im thinking oil pan gasket, valve cover gakets, new timing set ( my price range puts me at motors in the 90 to 100k range) coils, plugs and wires, water pump. Any other things I should do? figure do this now while its out of the car and on a stand. Also how about a little performance upgrades ill do a kn filter but anyone make a cold air intake kit for it? and how about a chip anybody have good luck with one inparticular? And as for the tranny I just planned on doing the filter kit, and any recommendations on what tranny fluid to runm synthetic?

Abs / Trac Off / Service Traction System

I went to Autozone and had them pull my ABS codes. I've had my ABS/Trac Off lights on for at least 2 years and I am finally tired of looking at them so hopefully someone can help me out with this issue.

Codes:
B1218
B1222
B1226
B1243
B1245
B1247

I just recently put on new pads, master cylinder and drivers side hub.

Will these codes clear automatically once the problem is fixed or do I need to have them cleared?

Also, sometime in 2008 I had my passenger side front hub replaced and my ABS Modulator Valve.

This is on a 2002 SS.

Thanks for any help!

O2 Sensor Bank Locations

My 96 3.1 Lumina has given me 5 codes that I need some assistance with cause I'm failing emissions inspection. These are the codes:P0102, P0135, P0141, P1406, p1652. Now, I changed 1 of my O2's, I was told that my car has 4. I need to know where BANK 1 is located because the readout says bank 1 sensors 1 & 2. For P0102, I put on a new MAF Sensor, so I need to know why this is popping up.
Thanks everyone.
