Geez.....yet another oil discussion about synth vs dino

Sorry to see a lot of the same arguments/myths being thrown out in this thread.....
First, I would ALWAYS use synthetic oil, period. I work on a lot of engines, and I can tell the second I open them uop whetgher someone uses synthetic or dino....major obvious. In fact, my recently departed 3100 in my Lumina had 285K on the clock, and I used synthetic all the time. Lower end, valvces, lifters, etc were all perfect.....couldn't say the same about the snapped camshaft though....doh!
OK....some myths:
- You CAN switch back and forth between synth and dino whenever. The "you can't go back" is BS
- NASCAR probably switched to Mobil1 for endorsement reasons. Come on....NASCAR doing something that doesn't mean more money for them? HAHAHA!!! Good one! Just because NASCAR runs anything, is NOT a reason to use it yourself....
- I ran a test in my Lumina where I pulled oil from 3000-12000 miles before I changed the oil (Mobil1). I sent the oil out for testing at Blackstone labs, and there was NO sigificant degradation in the oil or its chemical properties until it started to drop off slightly at 10K miles. If your engine is kept up (ie, isn't full of sludge and crap) you don't need to change the filter that often either. I changed my oil and filter at 10K with no problems.
- Sigh.....the Amsoil/Royal Purple debate......again. They are both MUCH better than dino, but frankly....not much different than any other synthetic. They may have a different additive package, but that's it. If someone has a sales deal, they usually push one or the other.
- You can change to synthetic as soon as you want..... I usually run dino for 3000miles in a new car, and change over right away to synth.
- You won't burn more oil with one oil vs another. *maybe* with a thinner oil, but not a different type
- The high mileage oil that was mentioned....it has an additive that softens and swells seal material, which helps to seal up your engine. Yeah, it works.....but kind of half ass solution if you ask me. If you are leaking oil, fix the seal!
Also, I see no reference for the factory (GM) filling any car other than the Vette with Mobil1.
Bottom line...use synthetic in a viscocity suggested in your owners manual. Changing it every 10,000 miles should be good, unless you are regulalry driving through the Sahara desert
YMMV.....
