if you have a 3.1 you have to swap out the whole thing. the trans will not work so well with the L67

I imagine with the low miles on the stock 3.1 I could sell it for a decent price which would help finance this project. Would the best route be to swap the entire engine & trans? I would think the s.c. 3.8 would have a beefier trans than my current 3.1. Heck, swapping out the entire sub-frame for the project is not beyond my capacity as an auto body mech.

Don't count on getting any money out of your 3.1- I tried selling mine w/ the tranny with about 90k on them, and didn't get any offers over about 10 forums. The last week I put it up for free w/ pickup- and no one would even come get it for free. The bad thing is they are a dime a dozen in junkyards, and they are not sought after for any performance part. At least if you had a 3400 or a 3500, then there would be the 3100 people wanting to buy it for parts- but with the 3100, the only thing worth any money might be the intake manis and heads for core's for porting.

The best route is to do the complete powertrain (engine, trans, axle inners). People have a hard enough time keeping the 4t65 on the 3800's together, much less having to work with a 4t60 from the 3100. Just do it once and be done with it, so you don't have to go back and mess with it.

Doing a complete subframe dropout would not be an easy way to go- you're easier off just dropping in the engine/trans. A 95 century should be an A-body still, and with the 3100 in there, the lower 3800 mounts should bolt right in. You'll just need to make upper mounts on the radiator support (assuming your 3100 is a side mount). I just think modifying a w-body or h-body cradle to fit would be a lot more work than needed for the swap. The only way I would do this is if you were crazy about making it a race car, then I would grab a 00+ impala aluminum cradle and swap that in- but like I said- a lot more work that route.

Look at the thread called "bumpins 3800 faq"

Scroll all the way to the bottom of the main post.

Its not the most complete yet, but I'm working on it....

Well, this isn't a motorswap, it's called a top end swap. You need the entire top end off a L67 engine (LIM, SC and fuel rails, pulleys, balancer)

HeavyChevy3800 did a top end swap. Check out his thread, and search up on it.

Hi, I'm a new kid on your block. I've been turning wrenchs for almost 40 years. I know alot about the old school hp tricks but next to nothing about computer cars. I've been reading all the stuff from your site and have a pretty good uderstanding on what I have to do to swap my 98 Lumina LTZ 3800 2nd ser. with a s/c 3800 1 ser. from an 94 Buick Park Ave Ultra. The question is, since the s/c engine has to be torn down do to a rod knock, do I just swap the top part, heads on up or the complete engine? I do realize that the 2nd ser. block is alittle lower in hieght, so are the angles going to allow me to mix the parts in the first place?

You don't want a series 1 you want a series 2. The series 1 had the M62 and didn't make anymore horsepower than the series 2 3800 n/a that is already in your car.

Look for an L67 out of a 98 or newer gtp, regal gs, etc. Or you can get an L32 out of an 04+ grand prix that will drop in basically the same as an L67 but will have the more efficient gen 5 blower.

Thank you for your input. Is there anything worth keeping from the 94 3800 s/c car?

Not really. Pretty much everyone is different for a series 2

What about the tranny? Could that be used with the 2nd ser. or newer 3800?

I'm trying to post some pic's, but I keep getting a error message. I guess I'll try another ave.

No.

I don't know why you would want a 16 year old tranny anyways.

i have a 99 monte carlo ls that has a little over 240,000 miles on it and the transmisson just started to slip i plugged my scan tool in and it was giving me a P1870 code which i looked up on all data at my school which it turned out to be a TCC solenoid check so to make a long story short i want to swap my 3.1 for the L67. After reading this it seems that i dont need any mods. It hasnt been lowered its bone stock except for intake and programmer, which i think is why the transmission started to slip. So if you could help me out with what mods i need or any useful info i would greatly appreciate it.
