Subject: Front Seat Shoulder Belt is Uncomfortable (Replace Both Front Seat Shoulder Belt Retractors, Shoulder Belt Guides and Push-on Nuts)
Models: 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
Condition:
Some owners may comment that the driver's and/or passenger front seat shoulder belt(s) are uncomfortable.
Correction:
Install new driver and passenger front seat shoulder belt retractors and shoulder belt guides (attached to the headrests) using the following service procedure. When installing new shoulder belt guides, new push-on nuts (P/N 11508192) must be used. For additional information, see the Interior Trim sub-section of Body & Accessories and the Seat Belt sub-section of Restraints in the 2000 Monte Carlo and Impala Service Manual.
The part numbers listed below are grouped together by color to make identification and ordering easier.
Important:
Do NOT replace the front seat belt buckles.
Service Procedure:
Remove the shoulder belt from the guide on the headrest.
Remove the upper shoulder belt attaching bolt from the "B" pillar.
Remove the coat hook and carefully remove the upper quarter trim panel.
Remove the rear seat cushion.
Remove the lower seat belt attaching bolt at the carpet.
Remove the carpet retainer from along the door opening.
Carefully reposition the front part of the lower quarter trim panel away from the body to access the seat belt retractor. It is not necessary to completely remove the lower quarter trim panel.
Remove the bolt attaching the retractor to the body.
Remove the bezel from the lower quarter trim panel.
Remove the retractor from the body and route the belt material through the opening in the lower quarter trim panel.
Route the new seat belt material through the opening in the lower quarter trim panel.
Install the bezel in the lower quarter trim panel.
Install the retractor to the body and install the attaching bolt. Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 42 N·m (31 lb ft)
Install the lower quarter trim panel to the body.
Install the carpet retainer along the door opening.
Install the lower seat belt attaching bolt at the carpet. Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 42 N·m (31 lb ft)
Install the upper quarter trim panel to the body and install the coat hook.
Install the upper shoulder belt to the "B" pillar attaching bolt. Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 42 N·m (31 lb ft)
Remove the headrest by depressing the buttons in the bezels at the top of the seat back.
Remove the two push-on nuts that attach the guide to the headrest. Discard the push-on nuts and old guide.
Install the new guide on the head rest and install new push-on nuts.
Install the headrest in the seat back.
Route the shoulder belt through the opening in the guide.
Repeat the procedure on the opposite side of the vehicle.
Install the rear seat cushion.
Parts Information:
Important
If replacement of an ORIGINAL PRODUCTION front seat shoulder/lap belt on the above described vehicles is required, then both the driver and front seat passenger belts must be replaced. In addition, both driver and front seat passenger shoulder belt guides MUST also be replaced. It is NOT necessary to replace the front seat belt buckles or the rear seat shoulder/lap belts.
