Yep. As the title says, I got my heads back today, the porting looks really good. Tomorrow I'm bringing them to VA to have a 3 angle valve job done, then the car will be put back together. I'll post pics of the heads after the valve job.

That's good to hear. Are you planning on doing anything else this winter while the car is down?

That's just about all I have planned for the winter. I am currently running a stock cam, but I will be getting an aftermarket one sometime next year - most likely an XP or VS, I'm leaning more toward the VS as of this moment. However, I do have a bit of time to make my decision. My Monte hasn't been driven more than 2 miles since LAST November, so as soon as I get the heads back, they're going on the car and I'm gonna park the Prelude.

So you have the motor down to the block and you're gonna put it all back together only to tear it apart again next year for a cam? Just do the cam now. Springs are super easy to install with the heads off, and you already have everything torn apart which means you only need to buy one set of gaskets. Plus, ported heads on a stock cam won't do a whole lot.

To begin with, I'm only getting unemployment right now, so I can't really afford a cam plus a cam install kit. That's $500 that I don't have, then I'd still need springs. Secondly, my unemployment may be running out soon, so I'm covering my bases and making sure that I have the Monte Carlo running so if I need to, I can sell the Honda. Another thing is a couple of my buddies are trying to find a different house to rent or whatever, and I'd rather spend the last $60 on head gaskets and drive the car rather than pay more than $60 just to tow the car. I'll gladly pay another $100 in gaskets to wait and install a cam somewhere with a garage. And the guy that ported my heads has a CSC L36 in his 6th gen, and he said he'd gladly help me with a cam install. He has a garage too, but again, I'm not going to pay probably $100 to have my car towed to his house (which is about 30 minutes from mine).

3800power, like I said, I'm not positive on what I'm going with yet, but your gains and running high 12's with that cam makes me want one as well - but on ZZP's website, it says that gains from an XP are 40-55 horsepower, while the VS is 35-50. I still think I'm leaning more towards the VS, since it can be used with stock springs, retainers, etc.

Because at the time I took the heads off, I had a damn good job, thanks for asking.

I understand where you are coming form with wanting to keep stock springs/retainers, but since you have ported heads, I would at least go with an XP, in my case I would go with the XPZ no doubt. Think about it, you can pick up LS6 valve springs for around 50 dollars from the one lingenfelter site, and the retainers are like 30 bucks. The horsepower gain is not the only reason I went with the XP, this car is actually pretty damn good on the highway now. With the powerband extending all the way to ~6500, especially with your ported heads, I don't see why you wouldn't want to go with a decent sized cam. No doubt the VS is an improvement, even over 1.9 rockers, but the powerband dies out a little too early in those cars.

Also, now that I think about it, if you got your heads ported, why didn't you get the valve guides milled? If you did, you can run your stock retainers, and only need the stiffer valve springs.

Very good argument about the cam. I had been planning on 1.84 rockers to be honest, now I'm onto a VS cam. Who knows, once I get a good job maybe I will splurge and get an XP - and if I do get the XP, the aftermarket springs I would definately get would be LS6 springs. As for the valve guides being milled, I'm actually having that done by the head shop. That, the valve job, and new valve seals. Then to get the head gaskets and I will be rocking the Monte once more. I've had a few people ask me if I sold the Monte over the past few months, so I'm determined to get it back in action. I haven't been excited about the Monte in a while.

Even a vs cam with ported heads is a waste. If you have the heads for it go with the NIC or even the XPZ

So you are getting the heads back from them, already assembled? Not sure what valve seals they are using, but IMO I would have them put Viton valve seals on them, unless they are already finished.

Yes, I'm getting the heads back with the springs installed, then I'll just put the rocker pedestals and the rockers back on. I have no clue what seals they're going to use, but I'll make sure to ask them to use Viton.

At least it isn't that hard to do. The only thing about it is that it's time consuming.

When it's done though, you HAVE to drive it and let us know what you think.

Started it up today! I still need to tighten up the downpipe bolts and install the EVAP, but I had my brother hold his finger over the EVAP port on the throttle body, and it fired right up!!! If it wasn't f*cking raining I could finish everything up!!!
