So my car has a column shifter, and in the summer the knob on the end tends to peel and feel sticky when its hot (Posted Image). So i was thinking is there a way to put a new one on? I know people swap out the knobs on their floor shifters all the time.. Has anyone ever done this on a column shifter?

you could always put in a floor shifter!

but you could swap yours... if you follow the lever down to the steering column, there is a pin that holds it in... use some needlenose pliers to pull it out, and then the shifter will pop right out

check the nut on the rack and see if it's wet down there. That's where they like to leak.

the parts themselves for the linkages cost me I think $40-50 shipped from a member on here, and came with the grand prix shifter with the leather boot.... I already had a console i picked up from ebay, I cant remember for the life of me how much that was though... i bought that before I even had the car lol

you dont HAVE to... some people who have done it changed the steering column too, but i didnt bother... the only thing, if you leave it, the piece that rotates on the column with your current shifter will still be there

Not that I want to thread hijack, but how long did the swap take Bronx? Was it easy to route all the cabling? There is just a plate on the floor right?

I bought a Z34 parts car that has floor shift gunna use the parts from that for the conversion, including the steering column, gauges ect. This way it won't be such a pain in the arse to pull the dash panel off should I need to get at the the controls behind it.

honestly I dont remember... i didnt do it all in 1 shot (thanks to rain)

my guess would be about 2.5-3 hours ... it wasnt difficult but tedious... remember I didnt change the steering column either

the hardest part for me was disconnecting the shift cable from the column shifter... alot of force had to be applied in a very tight space (thats what she said)

other than that it wasnt bad... disconnecting/connecting the cables to the transmission itself was annoying because my hands are ginormous, but again, wasnt difficult

Honestly, when my column shift cars get sticky, I clean it with Tuff Stuff or something like that, it takes a ton of scrubbing but it will come off after awhile.

When I got the white Lumina, it was so gross I actually picked the gunk off with a putty knife, then cleaned it. So far, that one and my other 2 column shift cars have no sticky issues.

Hey bronx...more pics of the dash/cluster. How did you do that with the trim rings around the gauges?

You will need the bolts, and the metal sleeves that the bolts screw into off of the floor of a monte with a floor shifter. You will also need the floor shift linkage (Cable that runs from shifter to transmission) If I recall there is also a brake switch, I dont know what that part includes, because I had a buddy do it while I was at work. Running the linkage under the carpet & firewall is a pain, but well worth it!

There are metal sleeves they screw into? Or is it just straight into the floor like how the counsel bolts down?
