The GenIII 3x00 660 is a very common engine. IMHO get a 3400 from a 00+ GrandAM, Impala or Monte Carlo. It's pretty much a direct swap with no modification and gives you an extra 20hp. The cost for a J/Y 3400 with good miles is about the same as a 3100. Expect to pay between $300 and $900 for a long block in decent condition. The price highly varies depending on how common they are in your local yards.

Thanks for the post Manitcor. I was wondering if you knew of all the car models with engines that would be an easy swap for my monte carlo? I'm not looking for anything in particular I just want to find something with low mileage weather it be 3100,3400, 3.8L whatever you know.
Thanks again!!!

The 3400 is going to be your best bet, mainly because it was discontinued more recently and it tends to have better castings and tighter tolerances in MOST cases.
The all Grand AM V6's made from 97-on had the 3400
Base model Grand Prixs (97+), Monte Carlo LS's from 00+ and there are many more.
GM used the engine primarily in mid-full size cars and some passenger van applications.
Poke around the forum a bit and I think you will find a list in some old threads.

I don't think emissions laws allow one to put in an older engine than the car or retrograding the diagnostic system to an older one.
