Well, I took a trip to Rosamond, CA and I visited a pick a part. I scored my console but had to bend the shift lever to get at the staple holding the handle on. It is on its way now via UPS as the airlines wouldn't let it on as baggage. Its beige with crap all over it( coffe stains, etc.) so naturally, Ill be repainting it navy blue to match Bluto's dash bezel. In another dead Lumina, I scored a PERFECT console lid. No scratches, hinges intact and latch intact. It was hiding in the trunk. Question is, how should I go about preparing it for paint? I know how to clean it and such, but surface scuffing is a mystery to me so far. Any ideas? And is Fusion good if you actually prep the surface? I used it once but didn't prep. So you can imagine how bad it came out.

So nobody knows how to paint and prep plastic? I've searched but not much definitive info.

i used something like fusion on my tail panel. i scuffed it with a scotch bright pad then cleaned it with wax and grease remover. i have seen people sand interior parts down smooth (until the texture is gone) then painted it with normal automotive paint, thats always an option

I used Krylon Fusion paint on my dash. I just cleaned it and painted it. It came out pretty well, except for a spot that the paint ran, and a fingerprint lol.

Yeahh that krylon fusion paint works pretty good. I used it to paint the plastic on my door panels, it worked great. I used just normal primer. And then i went to use it on my dash bezel, it basically destroyed it. The paint was peeling insanely and it bubbled up everywhere even though i prepped it the same as the doors. Weird eh?

go back to the wrecker and get a broken lid in the colour you want, then swap the pad onto the good one.

Who's lid is broken?
UPDATE: Sorry I should have clarified Brad. When I was talking about painting I meant my entire console. Besides a lil' hard anyway, the pick a part is in CA and I'm in the Bronx. Was visiting a chick who supposedly wanted me to be with her. Knew her since 2nd grade. LOL. I guess I shoulda' known. people don't change, they just say they have. I've never seen a factory dark blue console for a 99 Lumina. Is there one?

did you use the primer on it, if so thats prolly why unless it was for plastic also, the paint is designed to stick to plastic so i would clean it good and spray it right on there

Yes there is one. That is to say, yes there is in existence a blue interior with bucket seats in a Lumina, but probably not very common. I bet most blue interior Luminas have bench seats. Luminas with buckets have consoles in their interior colour whereas Monte Carlos all have black consoles regardless of interior colour, at least that's what I have gathered. There's no upick yard near you? I would have the guys in here, including me, check theirs periodically. Painting interior parts for me is a yucky prospect, and painting a padded part is a dubious proposal. Even the console has a thin layer of vinyl adhered on. Sections of it gets worn off near the cupholder and you can never prep properly for painting because you can't sand that stuff. I am not clear oon exactly what you are doing. Do you have a blue interior with bench that you are converting to a bucket interior?

Actually the 95-? Lumina console is all hard plastic. Absolutely no vinyl on it except for the armrest. I have an ex NYPD Lumina car with a Federal blue/navy blue interior. It was robbed of its Recaros before I got it so it has what I've decoded to be what the RPO#s online calls "European style buckets". It would have been easier to find an all black console and paint my bezel black. There are no Pick a Parts anywhere near NYC or the boroughs. the closest one is in PA. So, no, to clarify, my car came factory with Recaros and a column shift. Still looking for some damn Recaros in blue. Mint. Lmao. Who am I kidding lol.

It does have a vinyl layer, you just can't tell because it's almost impossible to detect if it has no wear, plus maybe some versions don't have it, but that would be a new one on me. Or maybe the Monte Carlos being black in every car don't have it. I thought mine was hard plastic but it did indeed have this "vinyl coat", it certainly looks and feels like hard plastic but furhter investigation reveals otherwise. I didn't mean it was padded, it's still "hard". It's a super thin layer of what seems to be vinyl. You can certainly mark it with your fingernail if you wanted to. The adhesive on the back of it is about as thick as it. That's how thin it is. It is only present on the top part which goes down about an inch down the sides. If you take apart the console you'll see that's separate parts. It doesn't continue inside the storage bin. It stops right under the front edge of the lid. You might be able to see the edge of the stuff there if you really look hard. The plastic under it is also the same colour(mine was burgundy) so you wonder why they have it. In some areas, especially The edges around the cupholder, it got worn off in mine, exposing the adhesive. I tried to clean it and realized it was adhesive and discovered this "layer". All the ones in the wrecker's, and I have seen it in blue there, are so badly worn it's easy to see it, and the only cure to it is to remove it and its adhesive if possible.
The odd times I saw 9C1s or 9C3s in the wrecker's, the last time of which was a few years ago, the tweed Recaros were always blue. I was looking for burgundy for mine.

From what I know the Recaros only came in that neutral beige color or blue. I bought a can of Rustoleum "Specialty plastic direct-to-plastic paint". (that's exactly what the can says) and painted the ash tray door and so far so good. Says it cures to full durability in 5-7 days. I have to tell you, only 4 hours after painting it, it's already stronger than the Krylon Fusion crap.

Like I said, I have seen blue Recaros with my own eyes, more than once, in 9Cx cars with blue interiors. They were clearly 9Cx cars by the lack of centre console, column shift, matching blue vinyl rear bench sometimes, and digital dash sometimes.
In my previous post I said tweed, but now that I think about it maybe I am confusing it with some other car. So tweed maybe, whatever they come like anyway.

I am agreeing with you Brad, THEY do come in blue. This I know. I said they don't come in burgundy lol. They are tweed. That's exactly my interior. Federal blue with navy blue accents. Vinyl floor, column shift and digital dash.

I didn't see the blue there in your post, only the beige.
