Hey there, I've got a 1997 z34 with a little over two hundred thou kliks on it....original exhaust....on monday went to start the car, turned the key but missed on the first try (unusual)...it made a bit of a weird noise then nothing....I got it started on the second try with some difficulty then heard the rumble from under the car......the right muffler had finally given out...at this point the engine wasn't idling right either (chugging).......went to the shop changed out the muffler, started the engine up on the second try with difficulty then ran fine home EXCEPT when at idle.............she kind of chuggs like about to stall but rpm's stable........could it be a sensor or blown gasket???....thanks

Hey there, the plugs are ok, the car always started up strongly on first try up until monday morning when muffler failed....guess 13 years is pretty good for original exhaust anyways....

*** I forgot to mention that there was a rotten egg smell for awhile when I started her up on monday for the first time....the smell was not there today.....just the weird chugging at idle and hard start.....

Your catalytic converter may have finally gave out and clogged the flow.

Yeah, it might be the cat then. It sounded like it might have been running rich too but more than likely the cat finally gave up. Time to get rid of the cat :D

Yeah.....I took a look under today and could see near the cat small wisps of smoke coming out, actually in 2 or 3 places along the main pipe as well....can't believe I missed it on monday...the whole exhaust system is toast...wonder what it's going to set me back?

It shouldnt cost you TOO much. Is the exhaust pipe bad or just the cat and mufflers? An exhaust shop bend you an entire new exhaust, replace your cat and mufflers. The entire thing would probably only be a few hundred bucks. Just a new cat and mufflers wouldnt be too much at all. Maybe 2-3 hundred, you could probably get the whole exhaust done for under 400. Anything over that would be a rip-off IMO.

I have a Borla Mid pipe in my garage if your interested. will sell it cheap, it has the OE flange, stainless T304 piping (will not rust out) and a resonator. It stops at the "Y" pipe. I repalced the mid pipe with a custom setup for my turbo. Rotten smell in the exhaust is definatly a bad cat.

Let me know if your interested in the mid pipe, i can shoot a pic. its in my garage collecting dust.
