Just like it says, should I quit my job or not? A little background for those who don't know, I f*cking hate my job. I'm underpaid for what I do and overworked (aren't we all right?). To top it off my boss is a prick that's never worked on a car a day in his life and thinks sh*t can get fixed instantly, and the one other tech is also a prick. He knows his stuff, but has been with the company way too long as is just as miserable as everyone at the other store. If that isn't the icing on the cake, the boss tells me today that starting tomorrow he's making it mandatory that we come in at 7am to catch up on work. The reason we have so much work to catch up on is because he's too f*cking lazy and the owner is too f*cking cheap to higher a lube tech to change oil. He's been talking about hiring one for about 6 months now with not even so much as an interview, and to top it off I'm 2 months overdue for my long overdue promised raise.

So what do you think? Am I just a whiny little b**ch or should I roll my toolbox out tomorrow and tell them all to blow me and have fun working 24 hours a day trying to play catch up when I'm gone?

Oh ya, before you vote take into account that I also go to school full time at night, and could have enough side jobs to live comfortably.

There are too many variables for me to say yay or nay here. You are pretty much going to be the best judge about this but it does sound like they're pretty hard to work for.

The one thing that makes me say that you absolutely shouldn't quit is that you have posted some pics of some nice cars there (ZR1, Lambo, etc).

Roll it out man.

I went through the same things you did. I wasnt one to cause sh*t or stir the pot at all at work. I went there for one reason and one reason only. Your phone will ring off of the hook once you roll out. I know mine still is!

I run my own shop now and its awesome. WAY more work, but well worth it. I'M my own boss. I answer to ME.

you hiring? lol

Well right now my GTP is stuck there because I washed it at lunch and then it wouldn't start. Didn't get to dig into it too much but I'm thinking fuel pump.

I'm leaning more toward leaving the more I think about it.

I wouldn't leave if you didn't know for SURE that you would have another job to fall back on. I know you said that you have side jobs, but those only last so long. The only way I would leave, would be knowing that you have at least 6 months worth of money/side jobs to live off of. Have you put in your application anywhere else here lately?

If your a respectable mechanic and do good work (which I'm sure you are cuz you've helped me out plenty already) and you feel comfortable you can get another good job easily and soon then quit if YOU really want to. Also keep in mind that not a whole lot of people really "enjoy" their job or like every aspect of it. Working on cars though is somethin I would never get sick of, it's just all the other stuff that's hard to deal with. I.E. your situation..... Honestly, find another job first that's more beneficial to you. If it isn't more beneficial (better work environment, better pay, etc.) then keep your current job until you do find a more beneficial one. I don't wanna vote cuz I'm on the fence about it, it is your decision

Yeah unless you've got something lined up, that's a big risk.

Can you move back in with the 'rents or something till you finish school?

I think it depends more on your financial situation than anything- if you've got enough saved up to make it until you finish school or get another primary job, and you're not happy there and have a good plan, then I'd leave.

As for your manager, you can't really complain a whole lot- it seems like he's trying to make himself look good and make the company more profitable by improving the numbers in the shop (keeping salaries as low as possible without everyone leaving, and running in an understaffed condition having the current workers cover the extra work). Thats very common in many different industries and companies right now- their only real slip up is making it so obvious to the employees that they're contemplating leaving.

As for being overdue for a raise- I have friends that are in a similar predicament. The company keeps saying that the down economy means no raises (and more work to cover for laid off employees), but they can't do anything because they weren't financially smart before the economic downturn and can't afford to just up and quit. Thats why I say it really depends on your financial situation.

I don't think it will hurt them that bad. They'll likely just spread the workload as much as possible over the current employees and rush to find someone to replace you if they have the staff spread as thin as you say they are now. In this economy, finding a replacement shouldn't take much time at all. So, you may cause them a little trouble in the short term (the next couple days, maybe week or two), but I don't think you're going to really going to be able to phase them much in the long run.

What kind of plan do you have if you do quit? Going to just do sidework until you finish school, then where will you go work? Will you need thisplace as a reference later on?

There are wayyyy tooooo many variables on this.

If you honestly don't need the job, then forget about it. But don't roll out your toolbox say blow me and leave. Leave on good terms, leave with 2 weeks notice. Past employers can have a say on getting another job, so you never want to leave angry and with bad standings.

x2 on this. Plus, when I put in my two weeks notice at my job, they offered me a pretty good raise to stay, which I took.

Good point with the job references. I've worked here for 3 years so if I didn't have a good reference from this place it might screw me over later.

As for cully, I do still live at home lol. I don't really even make enough to live on my own comfortably so I'll probably stay home till I graduate or at the best get an apartment with some friends.

Dude, being at home has a lot of perks... ride it out until you hit that 'point' when you know its time to get out.

My mom moved out before I did haha. Seriously, she moved out 2 months after I graduated HS and I lived there for like 8 months before I moved. I was ready to move out when I was like 15, although she was nice enough to let me stay with her for like a year and work a couple good jobs to get back on my feet after being anally raped on overdue rent thanks to a douche bag room mate

That's the way to go- I lived at home even for a little bit at the end of college and a little after- just to get all our loans paid off and get some money saved up for a house.

A little update on this. My boss comes up to me this morning and tells me we finally have a guy starting monday to change oil. Great right? Wrong. It's the parts manager's brother in law and apparently he has a bigger toolbox than both of us other techs so my boss tells me he's getting my rack and I'm getting moved to the sh*ty (basically a lube rack) rack. I told him no and its retarded that a lube tech is bringing a bigass toolbox and it wouldn't make sense for me to move since I'm the one trying to make the hours here.

A little background on said rack. It's one of those old style ones that have a tube in ground and they rise up. This particular one leaks hydraulic fluid like a siv, really isn't safe, and isn't sturdy enough to do any major work. Not to mention it sits underneath the car in the middle so you can forget about pulling transmissions on it.

So my service manager, being the vagina he is says he'll consider putting the new guy on a rack on the other side of the shop.

A little info about the rack on the other side. It's a perfect good working 2 post, fairly new rack that the other tech doesn't even use. In fact he put up a table to eat lunch in it.

So I see no reason why I should have to leave the rack that has the computer, actually works, and has a flat stall for other work to go to the sh*tty rack when I've been at the store longer than everyone including the service manager.

Basically I've decided if he tells me I have to go to the sh*tty rack I'm giving him my 2 weeks notice. This could be the straw that breaks the camels back.

You're definately approaching this the right way, your boss and co-workers sound like butt pirates. If they make you move to that other lift I'd put in your 2 weeks, just like you said. Maybe they'll accept it or maybe they'll change their minds and give you a raise and put the lube guy (<---- + butt pirates=haha) on that other lift

I quit today!

2 weeks ago when my boss told me we were now required to come in at 7am I told him I can't do that and this is my two weeks notice. He asked if I could come in at 8 would I stay, I said yes but there is also the raise I was promised for 3 months ago. He says he will talk to the big boss about it and get right back to me.

2 weeks go by and after me asking a few times he doesn't have an answer yet. So today I finally ask again and tell him I did ask 2 weeks ago. He proceeds to tell me that they can't afford it right now because we hired a new lube guy. I told him fine, my things will be out by Saturday.

Nothing but junk coming in tomorrow so I think I'm feeling a little sick tonight lol, not like I made any money this week anyways.
