i'm starting to consider getting a remote start for my car. is there a system out there that strictly starts it and doesn't unlock it and such? cause i already have my factory keyless/alarm and i think that if i buy a system that also does that, i would have to use that new remote and my other factory key fob wouldn't work.

If you get a remote start, you don't have to just use the new one- you can tell them just to hook up the remote start part, and use your old keyless. If you got a new remote start unit that had keyless and 1 aux out for trunk pop- wouldn't it be easier to just use the new remote exclusively?

this is where i got mine, works great>>> http://bulldogsecurity.com/
if you get one with other stuff your original remote should work also but they do sell them with just start and stop, easyer to install... youll need a bypass module also from there

I don't think you should do it. It's going to mess with the BCM like crazy, a lot of 6th Gens with remote start wind up getting locked out of their passlock system after a year or 2.

By a couple wires- if you're already installing a brain and remote start- just adding trunk pop and lock/unlock is only like 3 more wires. Since you've already hooked up or ran like 20, its no big deal- and you've already got it all pulled apart anyhow.

That's why I'd just go full aftermarket- and have the new remote do all of it. I've had a remote start/alarm/keyless on both of my impalas (my old 00, and now my 03) for years with no problems, and I've also done montes like that with no problem as well.

idk i just like having the stock fob for the security and lock/unlock so i wouldn't have to worry about aftermarket issues. plus since you control that stuff through the radio, using an aftermarket fob how would that work without screwing with things? idk i just think something will get screwed up somehow lol.

Obviously if you just used the aftermarket fob, you wouldn't control it through the radio anymore- pretty simple. It needs to be programmed through the new brain, just like your new remote start settings. So its not as user-adjustable, but how often do you really change your settings (ie flash parking lights, honk horn, etc)?
I just think you'd look retarded carrying around 2 key fobs for 1 car.

you're right it would make sense to use the new fob. idk why i wanna keep the factory one though. i'll probably just keep lookin around for now. you recommend installing it yourself or having someone else do it?

i would do it myself, i did mine, just follow the directions, they make an adapter thing that goes in your main harness so you can hook the wires to it and dont have to butcher yours. if you ever want to take it out all you have to do is unplug it on each side and hook it up like it was from the factory

I don't usually give a recommendation on this unless I know the person and their background. I think it is simple, but I've also done maybe 200 or so between alarms, remote starts, etc. Even without using one of those adapter harnesses, its just a matter of taking a wire from the new brain, and finding which wire it goes to on the car- and making that connection securely without damaging the factory wiring (for example, taking the yellow wire from your brain that is for ignition- finding the wire that goes to on the car's harness (there are many wiring color charts online, or you can use a multimeter and just test it yourself)- then just stripping some insulation off the factory wire, and 'threading the needle' with the new wire- and securely taping it. Repeat that 20 or so times, and you're done.
Honestly, the most difficult part of it (outside of basic electrical knowledge)- is planning all of your wiring runs so that all your wiring going to the brain is clustered together- and so you can securely mount the brain out of the way, but still accessible if needed; essentially making it look factory.
But I've told people that they could do it by just following the directions- and even printing the wire color diagram for them- and they bring back a crazy hacked up mess that takes hours to correct. I've seen people cut factory wiring, blow fuses, damage factory plugs (from pulling hard on the factory harness to get extra wire), match colors on the brain to the car (obviously colors won't match), break their key apart and tape the transponder to the ignition cylinder, use duct tape, use masking tape, leave so much extra wire that some is hanging by the pedals, and the list goes on and on. I would say that a remote start unit is definitely one of the more difficult of your 'normal' car electronic installs- its not many more wires than a radio install- but on a radio install the colors match on both harnesses, and all your wiring is in one spot.
It really depends how comfortable you are at working with stuff like this.
