M y son just bought a 99 monte with the 3100. It has a leak. I did a pressure test and there was a stream of coolant coming from under the alternator real close to the belt. Could this be the timing cover ?The stream was shooting straight to the firewall. I have looked around this site and seen alot on uim and lim but not on the timing cover. It has 168000 on it. Starts right up and runs great, just don't want to overheat it. Thanks for any help / suggestions.

I got a 95 lumina with the 3.1 I have had number or overheating problems I've replaced the coolant temp sensor because the radatior fan would kick on that helps a lot and I have a similar leak now but also have one at the waterpump pully so I will be replacing the waterpump in the morning I will let you know if that makes a change in coolant loss

Sounds like a bad water pump.

I had to replace the timing cover on my 97 LS, so yes it can happen, it's just not as often as the other trouble areas.

yep, timing cover/water pump gasket. This happened to my car last summer, leaked in the same spot.
