Egr Trouble #3 solenoid
#1

the dang check engine light comes on when i'm goin downhill. same code as always... #3 solenoid.... and it's a new egr valve. i cleaned the old one, it had rust up in the solenoid, so i cleaned it, installed it, and no check engine light for 3 days and wham! it comes on. so the new one is on again... same thing... and yeah, i reset the codes. new gaskets too, any ideas? Every day i drive it there is no engine light, but if i accelerate and then let off the gas and coast... light comes on, same if going downhill.... usually about 45 to 55 mph.

^This is what I had to do to my 97, but I had a different code than you? After I had cleaned the passage with lots of brake cleaner and a coat hanger, the code cleared up.

i'll need to take it back to my mechanic for the exact code, but it's for the #3 solenoid...... not working. i cleaned out the main passage which wasnt all that badly dirty, and replaced the egr. after a couple days the code came back, so i took the old egr apart , found the bore of one of the solenoids was rusty and preventing the solenoid from operating. i cleaned the heck out of it and reinstalled it, which worked fine for a couple days, then code came back. weird thing tho. while i was driving around on 5 cylinders with a broken rocker arm... not a single code was coming up.

OK.... The code, which is OBD 1... is 77 digital EGR valve no#3 solenoid faulty or EGR passage obstructed. which is why i cleaned it all out and stuff. i have a 95... and it has the "old style" OBD connector, so of course i can't do the paperclip trick and get the engine light to flash the codes. anyone got a scan tool they wanna sell cheap?

I have a theory i need help with. I have a few big holes in my exhaust / mufflers, since the engine light only comes on when i'm coasting above 40 mph, could the egr system be sucking in air through the exhaust and setting the trouble code? The EGR system hasta know what kinda gasses are being recycled in order for it to know what solenoids to open to control amounts of exhaust gasses it sucks in, so if it's sucking in "clean air" that could make the system think a solenoid is malfunctioning.... right? and isn't there more vaccum when you're coasting in gear? theres definitly not as much exhaust pressure, so...... feasible?

Unless the exhaust leak is at the EGR tube or before the o2 sensor, it won't affect drivability or mess with sensor readings.
