Well my car has a blinking security light...had it towed home and it doesn't start...it doesn't even crank...now I have read that this is normal...but how do I fix this fast? What's wrong with it? Is it the key? What do I need to change? It's my DD and I need it ASAP. Someone help me out here...

5gen? probably the wires for the pass key in the steering columb, they move every time you turn the ignition
best fix is to jump it out with resistors

My reason for asking about the spare key was to see if it was the chip in the key or the ignition cylinder

Yeah, it's most likely your Vehicle Anti Theft System acting up. There are two 100% fix solutions - 1) Replace the key and ignition switch, or 2) Bypass the VATS. Do a search up here for VATS, it should come up. I used resistors to "fix" mine, but sometimes it won't start for 5 minutes, then it'll fire right up.

find the resistance of the chip in your key, splice a resistor of the same value into the wires, the VATS system will always think the chip is in the ignition
