My haynes repair manual says to rotate the engine forward in the engine compartment to reach the back plugs and all that other nonsense back there.... i disconnect all the necessary stuff, but what about the exhaust? i cant really tell how its all configured, seems to me that something would have to give.

Unbolt the dogbones and the engine will move back and forth. You really don't even need to do that.

By rotate, they really just mean "rock"
Like said above, you disconnect the dog bones, and then the engine will move freely (to an extent)
I like to open my driver door, and with one foot on the parking brake, I like to rock the car forward and back until I get the engine to where I need it to be and then I step on the parking brake. Everything has the couple of inches of give and movement that is required, you won't tear anything.

Tis why I hate working on this engine. Nothing is easy access.
Try an lq1 stock 3 rear plugs take a few hours to change. Me na I can do it in 10 min because I have set the na plenum up to it doesn't have coolant going to the arm or coil bracket bolts or egr pipe. But takes me 2 hours to get the blower off and on. Haven't taken it off in 3 years just to much fun to drive.
