[rant]

Start with a few key stats...
-Working with the company for 6 years in september (all part time)5.5 years in the same department
-Work on average 40-45 hours a week from end of march to september for the last 4 years (was essentially a department manager during this time with much more responsibility than a typical part timer)
-Also during the last 4 years I averaged about 1500 hours per year
-Was in high school and college during my 6 years, just graduated college in June with a bachelor's degree in business management from an accredited business school
-22 years old

ok, here goes nothing. So when i graduated college i was supposed to be entering into a manager trainee program that would gurantee me a dollar raise over everyone just for completing the training and having a bachelors degree. Well due to some paper work errors and bad timing i was unable to do the training and on my own part i decided not to do it because of the relocation clause in the contract that i signed. (they can move me anywhere in the midwest at anytime once the training is done without my discretion).

So i decided to take the part time job and just wait for a managment opening. found one, called the store manager, he seemed interested and said would give me a call back. Never called me back, i called him 5 times total. the intitial call where he seemed interested, the second time was 3 days later, i left a message if he could give me a call back, a day later i called for a third time and was put on hold and then hung up on so i called back and he said he had the information on me and was looking at another applicant and would call me later in the week for a phone interview, the fifth time i called him "later in the week" on friday night and he told me they had hired someone (actually mistook me for the guy that got the job), i understood so i just asked him what i can do better next time, the only thing he said to me,"nothing, better luck next time" i said what? and he said i have to go and hung up. keep in mind this is a job within my company, just at a different store. about a month ago this happened.

Bring it to this week, found the exact opening i wanted (in the department that i have worked in for 5.5 years) at the store i wanted to be in (worked there for 4 years) working with the people i wanted to work with. call the store, set up an interview for last friday. Had my interview, did very well. Was told i would get a call either monday (today) or tuesday. There were 2 other applicants. So i called today because i couldn't wait for a call. I was told by the department manager that they gave the job to someone else, was frustrated so i just said thank you and ended the call. I called back to speak to the human resources manager (younger woman) just to figure out, like with the other job, what i could do better and what may be holding me back. keep in mind i have worked at this store for 4 years before i moved to another store 2 years ago. She couldn't give me a straight answer, just kept "umm'ing" and "uh'ing" around a good answer and was saying things like we were all good canidates and they just decided to go with the other guy but my interview went "really, really" well. now i'm pretty pissed off.

[/rant]

thoughts?

and my question to you guys is, what would you guys do in my situation? continue on with my part time status currently working ~20 hours per week? try to find another full time job and keep this part time job until i get my four figure bonus profit sharing check and quit? really frustrated with how i am being treated from a company that i have worked my ass off for for 6 years.

Ensure that you're actually going to get a bonus. And if you're not in college now, I'd get a full time job and work the little 20 hours they give you. It's tough working that many hours a week, but I've been doing that for like 8 months now on salary of course...

Honestly, it sounds like you covered everything well. However, your interviews could have gone well, it could have been something where they hired within that specific store, or it could have been someone knowing someone, etc. I see it all the time where I work. Even if you may be the better candidate, they will probably hire someone they like on a personable level more-so than someone with better work attributes.

Just curious what store is it that you work for? If you don't want to give a name, is it a grocery store, supermarket, etc?

i know for a fact the first one was for that reason cause the guy told me that lol.

but the second one wasn't for that reason. i had worked at the store i applied at for 4 years. i knew everyone in the department pretty well and i knew the store manager and department manager that interviewed me and they hired outside of the store. so i don't know what went wrong there. i will be in town this weekend and i am just gonna go in and talk to them, its easier than the phone cause its much harder to blow me off.

i work for menards, the largest home improvement store in the midwest

STOP CALLING SO DAMN MUCH!! Geez if I was your manager I wouldn't hire you just because it sounds like you were annoying lol. Its polite to call back a day or two after to thank the employer for the interview, then leave it alone! If you keep calling back it won't give off a good impression. Its a tough job market too, chances are there were other people more qualified or that had more experience.

Also, if this manager program only offers a dollar raise over everyone else it kinda sounds like a joke. I'd keep working there but start looking aroun for better opportunities. If anything, six years with the same company will show your loyalty to your employer.

another menards worker lol! i agree with how much they suck with the pt/ft thing, i worked the last 2 1/2 years in receiving fighting for ft and never got it!!! i recently transferred to Millwork and have been told that i should be full time in a month or so (we will see). i also have been leery of the manager trainee program, i do not like that clause either, cant imagine packing up everything to move wherever they tell me. also played as the PT doing management work while in receiving, i closed almost every shift, carried the phone/radio, gave the orders and got things done inside while my managers hung out outside doing nothing! all in all im glad i left my previous department, and am enjoying my new one. i do think im going to go back to school next fall because i feel its just not worth the headache of trying to get management/ft around here, and the hour drop off in the winter as a pt kills me.

what store and department are you in? im in peru3130.

sounds to me like the kind of company where you won't get much above peon without attaching your lips to some ass.

that is typically my cue to find another job.
