Hey folks!
My 1997 Monte Carlo LS now has 286,789 miles on her, the old 3100 still fires up and chugs along, the 4T60E starts off in 2nd gear when cold, sometimes takes several miles to decide to shift into OD when you get to hwy speeds, and she is STILL knocking down 28-30mpg........I love this car, comfortable on road trips, smooth ride, just...........tired.
It's time to revive her, breathe new life into her.
I have a chance to pick a 2001 Monte Carlo as a parts car.......it was hit in the right front and the owner just wants to sell it and get rid of it. I haven't gotten to get over and see it in person yet, just going from his description of the car, but it sounds like a good deal if I can use some of the parts to refurb my trusty ole '97 LS.
From what I can tell, the 2001 models came equipped with either the 3400 or the 3800 engine.
If it's a 3400, I can pretty much just swap the engine and transmission into my 1997 with a few minor mods here and there and be up and running again without to much fuss.
However......if it's a 3800, that's where I need input and/or advice.........
I'm thinking I can remove the engine compartment harness and PCM and move them to my 1997 if it's a 3800 engine, probably have to do some mods to the C100 bulkhead connector, possible even have to investigate using the 2001 steering column in the older car. I know my 1997 has the chip in the ignition key..........did the 2001 models use some sort of VATS also?
Basically, I was planning on using the newer PCM in my car to control the 3800 and transmission, swap in the 2001 steering column if needed to make sure it starts and fires up.
Not sure, will probably end up having to use the axle shafts from the newer car also, not an issue if that's what I need to do.
What other parts are interchangeable between the cars? Wheel bearings, brake calipers, brake cylinders, etc?
Thanks for taking time to read this and leave feedback.
It's time to refresh the 1997, and while I found a 30K mile 3400 engine for $500 (sounded like a good deal), buying a whole parts car for $700 that will likely have EVERYTHING I need to freshen up my car seems like a much better deal.

The 3400 should drop in with little to no problem at all. However, I believe that the only tranny available for the 6th gen Monte's were the 4T65E (correct me if I'm wrong) except for the 2004 & 2005 Monte supercharged SS' which had the 4T65E-HD in it. So you will need to do something with the PCM if you decide to go that route.
If it's a 3800 swap, your best bet would be to find a wiring harness from a 98 or 99 Monte Z34 or Lumina LTZ. The wiring harness from a 6th gen Monte will not work.

3800-here is a good link, it is a swap to a l67, but it gives you a good idea of what you are looking at.. fairly straightforward, dont know if you will have to splice the axle shafts since it is not the 4t65eHD, but you might just be able to interchange everything without any additional cost, since you have donor car.
3400- would be pretty much plug and play.
