I have a 96 monte carlo and it starts fine and runs fine. If I stop (and go to the store or out to eat etc.) it has trouble starting back up. I have to give it a bit of gas to get it to start back up and when it does fire up the RPMs shoot way up and then fall back down to where they're supposed to be. It runs fine and starts fine the first time of the day or if I get immediately back in it (like at the gas station for example). Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I should also mention that I can hear the fuel pump turn on when I turn the key so I can pretty much rule that out for now (and the fuel pump was replaced a few years ago).

I don't think so, the SES light hasn't come on and if that was the problem it likely would. I Replaced the stock air filter box with a cold air intake last summer and cleaned out the MAF so I don't think that's it.

I'm not sure what you mean by oiled but in any case, this issue was going on before I even swapped those so It's not that cause.

When you have an air filter that is oiled (i.e. K&N) the oil can come off, get on the MAF sensor and ruin the readings by it.

That's all I was saying. Usually trouble hot starting can be the MAF, next time it does it, just unclip the MAF sensor and see if it works to rule it out.

If you are having trouble with it starting, and you unplug the MAF it may start easily. Then you know it's the MAF sensor. It will just run on memory instead of real time data though, so try not to run a long time without it

Alright I was able to rule out the MAF today, other ideas or thoughts?

just an update, I changed the 3/6 coil pack today and went to change the fuel filter but the nuts are seized on the so there is no way for me to get them off without taking it somewhere to have it done professionally and I don't have the extra $60 it costs to have someone change the fuel filter for me. Why must these cars be so damn hard to change anything on!?!?

Maybe the IAC. It may be sticky. The only air it gets through the throttle body to start without pushing the gas pedal is through the idle air control. This should open a little when the key is turned on to allow air for start and idle. If it starts right up when you push the gas pedal I think your just opening the throttle body up allowing it to get air. That may be why it idles high for a second until it burns off the extra fuel in the intake from trying to start it without air. You can pull the IAC and spray it with brake clean or starting fluid, but don't drop it, its fragile. After you take it out you can plug it in and turn the key on without turning the engine over and watch the little plunger pull in a bit. I would put it back in the throttle body before I turned the key off because I've seen them spit the little plunger completely out before. If its still good it could ruin it. And don't try to spin the little plunger thingy, that could ruin it too. Like I said they are fragile.

Just something I've seen before and is a cheap test. You could actually pull the IAC out, leave it unplugged, and start the engine. Its gonna idle real high so don't run it long.

Let us know what you find.
