good evening everyone.... Quick questions, I am looking at purchasing my son a used 2002 Monte Carlo LE that has a 3.4 V6 Engine in it that has 84000 miles. I have driven a lot of miles on various 3.8 V6 engines but have never owned a vehicle with the 3.4.

Can anyone give some good/bad information on this engine????

thank you all in advance for your comments and advice.

Watch for intake gasket failure

Go easy on the transmission

He won't really be able to mod that engine like crazy so you don't have to worry about him being TOO dumb with the car :)

He'll only really be able to do very general mods, without spendings thousands. They're a very solid engine in my opinion, i've had no trouble with mine. The lower intake gasket is famous for going bad in these cars so that may be something to keep an eye on before purchasing the vehicle.

at 84,000 miles there's a chance that the gaskets have already been replaced. do a service check on the vehicle if you can to try and find out. usually they go around 75k...just about a set a watch by 'em. but it's basically what my old monte carlo was. a '96 that i bought in '00 with 70,000 miles on it. rebuilt the trans at 120k and did the lower intake and head gaskets at 130k before i got rid of it. the car lasted me 9 years so i can't complain. for the right price it's a good buy...without knowing a lot more about the car though i'd say that i would offer $4,000 and see if they bite. the car is 10 years old after all even if it is low miles for the year.
