Today I replaced the left axle in my '99 Monte. It was very difficult to "unplug" it from the transmission. In fact I had a scare; when I thought I finally got it to click out, the entire rod it is attached to came out with it! I thought I had just cost myself a huge tranny bill. But I looked in my manual and found the rod has a similar end on the other end that clicks into the differential inside the case. I pulled the entire assembly out, got the axle end off the dam rod. Then I just inserted the rod back into the tranny and it "popped" back into place. Was I happy!

In the GM service manual it says just to use a flat tool (a large flat screwdriver) and use the frame for leverage. They don't mention that the rod may release from the inside of the case before it releases from the axle!

Yah, Nitehawk, I used a crowbar too! The problem is it released the little circlip on the opposite end of the rod, not the end holding the axle on.

Ok, another question. I may have to replace the RIGHT axle. The book says to use a few special GM tools along with a slide hammer. To those of you who have done the right side, is this necessary?

No, just do the same thing you did to the other side. Unless your non HD tranny is different than my HD, which I doubt, crowbar = best friend

Just move/wiggle the axle around a lot after each little pry, makes things much easier

Thanks for your advice NiteHawk! I'll tackle the right side soon!

I've owned my Z34 Monte since new, about to turn 168,000 miles.

It's been a very good car for 13 years. Just the normal repairs for a car with 168,000 miles. A/C still blows cold.

Screw driver and a light tap of a hammer usually will get them out. But that intermittent shaft that came out not all have that ability the 4t60 alot have clips in the differential holding them in and are a b**ch to get out because you have to pull the dif out and work on it separate.
