Also in a stock setup (which mine is) the battery is hidden below the windshield washer tank, and on top of that by the left cross chassis brace.

It's hard seeing down in there without taking alot of the stuff out like the washer tank and such. I'm not use to them being painted the body color. Are these spot welded to the unibody?

So I guess you found your battery tray! The one thing to watch is rust/corrosion. If you have your battery out, clean up the tray, spray some WD40 all over it (to chase out any water).
On stripped threads, that's why I work on my own car. Many of those "techs" (what they like to be called nowadays) don't give a rats a**. Strip threads, break things and then cover up. Zoom, zoom get the job done.
Only a couple things that I'm forced to let anybody touch my car. State inspections and tire install. And I cringe on each!
