With the cold weather arriving my starter was cranking kinda slow. Except the NAPA battery is only a year and a half old. My car was in the water when Hurricane Irene came through so I thought I'd check both battery cables for corrosion.
Well, as I dug in I was amazed to find the positive cable rubbing on one of the A/C pipes (just to the right of the battery). The cable insulation was completely worn through! The wires were actually touching the A/C pipe! Now you think that my car wouldn't run right and the battery would be dead every morning. But for some reason I was able to start and drive. (I'm speculating the A/C system isn't grounded very well) There was a weird clicking when I made right turns that has disappeared (I thought it was a C/V joint). Also my ABS brakes would activate sometimes for no reason (I was braking lightly on dry pavement).
You might be wondering: There are plastic corrugated covers on the cables, why didn't it protect the cable? Well there are covers but on my car, one cover stopped one inch to the right of the pipe and another started one inch to the left. I think it might have been a bad factory installation! If there was one place that cable had to be protected that was the place.
I have replaced the cable and of course made sure it's protected. The slow cranking has disappeared! Also I drove the car yesterday and I couldn't get the other 2 problems to show themselves. Very interesting. All you guys with the '95 - '99 3.8 engine, check your positive cable for damage.

Yah digital, that's pretty much how mine looked! My Monte is running much better now. A strange clicking noise when I turned right is now gone. Who knows what it was.
